Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

First let me say that the crew was very friendly. We went on a rough, rainy sea day and they gave us time to try to see manta. I appreciated that they were accommodating. The reason for my low review has to do with an awareness from the 2 man crew (both appeared under 30), who didn’t seem to take into account that due to the smaller size and lighter weight of the boat we ‘chopped’ through the water at high speed as though we were on a trampoline that didn’t have much give. I’m in good shape, active runner, middle aged and I suffered significantly from repeated hits on my tailbone from going airborne to slamming my backside against the bench. I felt the pain and pressure 24+ hours after. There’s no other way to say it but the drive never should have been that fast. Driving back he seemed distracted, on his phone and appeared to veer off. Lastly, although safety was noted by periodically checking headcount, I can confidently say I wouldn’t have wanted to take my children or anyone without previous experience on a day where the weather wasn’t ideal. There were just moments I worried about people’s safety. Again we went on a very rough sea day with heavy rain and waves so please take this into account.

Small boat (up to 12 people, we were 10 that night) which was very nice compared to other crews. Once you get to the spot, then it gets crowded but that is the price to pay for this incredible experience. We saw at least 5 different manta rays for a good 20-25 minutes. They come up real close and might even touch you (however never initiate contact yourself because you might hurt them). The water was around 80 degrees but since you don’t move a lot, I would advise taking the wetsuits provided by Hawaii Oceanic. Alicia and Lee were great. You can see that they love to share their passion with people. I understand that people with few sea experience can get seasick easily as the boat ride can get quite hectic.

My partner and I visited Big Island for a little get away. We agreed on the idea of night snorkeling with the mantas and I'm glad we experienced this together with Hawaiian Oceanic! The boat captain and his co-worker were excellent entertainers and were educated on the manta Ray's. I would recommend this company to Big Island visitors who would like to experience this as well, they're fairly cheap compared to the other companies!
