Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

This is a small provider who does a very good job. If you think you would enjoy the chance to meet a few people, chat with your crew and enjoy the short trip to the snorkel site, this is a great choice. The date of our booking we found ourselves stuck in traffic near the airport and, by rights, could have been SOL. We were lucky enough they had availability on another date and were willing to let our reservation to carry over. Prior to departure, my wife was concerned about two things - snorkeling at dark and being on a smaller boat - neither of which turned out to be a real concern. You get in the water before dark and when you exit the water there is lots of light from the boats to see what you are doing. Time to destination was under a half hour. Excellent captain and Crew - Dusty and Ellison were engaging, fun, and responsive. Despite waiting for a few late bodies, Dusty still got us to the destination early enough to secure one of the few mooring sites. We watched a beautiful sunset and then got in the water. The light board did its job and Ellison did great work putting us in areas where the mantas would approach us and do their backflips. After seeing a couple of Manta's our 7 year old wanted back on the boat. El took him there and Dusty kept him company while we completed the snorkel. Can't say enough about how good they were with our boy. Gave him towels, kept him warm, gave him snacks and put a smile on his face. We also had a long lasting smile on our faces from the experience. Been to Hawaii 16 times and this was the most memorable experience of the bunch. Will do it again next time to the Big Island.

I highly recommend this company. It was well organized and the crew was very friendly (Dusty and Dylan). We ended up having a 3 hour trip (usually 2) since we went to different spots to find giant mantas. In the end we saw 4 big mantas which swam around us for about 45 minutes. It was very beautiful! Wetsuits, mask, snorkel, and drinks were provided.

My family and I had a wonderful and unforgettable experience seeing the manta rays last Tuesday night. As a general rule I prefer to go with smaller tour operators, and Hawaii Oceanic had the additional benefit of being "green". As it was a rainy evening the other guests on our trip cancelled, which meant that our family enjoyed a private tour that evening. Captain Dusty and Ellison were terrific guides - knowledgeable, funny and safety focused. We arrived at a spot north of the harbor and were able to get in the water very quickly, and immediately saw a manta below us doing flips. We were very lucky to see the few mantas swimming that evening, as it became clear that many of the guests on the larger boats never got to see them. I would highly recommend this trip as a "must-do" for anyone visiting the Big Island!
