Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview

Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

This experience blew our minds. In theory we knew how big manta rays get. We knew we might see one. But seeing one up close…. Wow. We saw a male pretty quickly and he came right up, flipped on his back and skimmed the ‘surfboard’ we were hanging on to. He did this many times. We were stoked thinking that was pretty awesome. But that wasn’t the best part. Captain Justin moved the boat (and us) a bit and then the real show began. We saw 6 or 7 of them. 5 kept coming up for a snack. One of the females (our guide, Brent, said her name is Chloe) had a 13-15 ft wingspan. And she is apparently notorious for having no personal space. We experienced that! It was spectacular. They are massive fish!!! The entire team at Hawaii Oceanic made us feel welcomed and safe. Booking through trip advisor was easy. Lexy was super friendly and helpful greeting us. The boat ride is so short that we didn’t get much time with Captain Justin and Caspian but they were helpful, friendly and willing to answer any questions. Brent was super helpful in the water. I would have liked to ask more questions but I was too busy with my head down looking at the rays. Caution: do not lie about your snorkel experience. It will not serve you well. You have to be confident snorkelling in the ocean - not a pool. The waves can swell a bit. And we went in the dark. We had several people panic before we had even seen a ray and had to go back to the boat. Absolutely no shame in that at all! This is a bucket list item - check it off!!!
