Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

Great overall experience getting up close and personal with the mantas. The guide, Hunter was an amazing guide. Very knowledgeable, friendly and welcoming. The reason I’m giving it three stars was that the equipment wasn’t great (had to ask for two replacement snorkels just in my family of four) and my snorkel actually had a hole in it that I didn’t realize until I was in the water. This led to me having to spit out salt water and pull myself up after one breath so I wasn’t able to enjoy it as much as I would have. At the time, I thought, at least my wife or kids didn’t get this snorkel and I’m just going to hold my breath. The drop on the review was because after we got out and I handed my snorkel to the captain, i told him it was broken and his response was “it’s a good thing we already have your credit card”. I wasn’t asking for a refund and he didn’t even thank me for letting him know it was broken or say sorry about that. Overall, a great trip but soured by a broken snorkel and a captain who didn’t seem to care he has broken equipment. Hope you don’t get that snorkel if you do book with them as I don’t even know if he pulled it out of circulation.

Aloha - thank you for your feedback, and we're glad you had a great experience with our staff and the manta rays. Regarding the broken snorkels, we apologize for the inconvenience. We are constantly evaluating our gear for efficacy, and we always replace gear that is no longer working properly. Most of our gear is less than 3 months old and gets updated regularly. Unfortunately, snorkel gear sometimes breaks during a tour, and we are forced to swap out a snorkel or mask, which our team did and corrected the issue. It seems the captain was attempting to make a light-hearted joke about the credit card, and we apologize that it was not well received. We should not be joking about issues that are concerning for guests, and we will make sure our staff understands this moving forward.

It was pouring rain during our night out among the manta rays but that did not stop our adventure. The boat ride in and back was a bit choppy but Dramamine worked fine. Everyone was super friendly and knowledgeable. I had several text exchanges with Lexy the night of and she always responded with encouraging words (was slightly worried due to weather). We had a great time and our 17 yr old loved it and filmed the entire event. Our favorite manta was Amanda, who comes in extra close. She has no issues with personal space - gets right against the board.
