After spending time exploring the desert area around Palm Springs we were advised to check out the Aerial Tramway. So glad we decided to do it. Your adventure starts with about a 15 min cable car ride to the top, the cars revolve so you get amazing all round views both going up and coming down. Once at the top there are a couple of food outlets and observation decks areas to relax and enjoy the spectacular views. Talking a paved walk way down in the valley area you have several choices of hikes, these are not paved! There are various view points along the trails to enjoy the views. There is wonderful smell of pine in the air, and the temperatures were almost 20 degrees cooler than the desert floor. There are camping areas, although not sure of what kind of facilities there are, but there were plenty of people carrying camp equipment with them. We spent probably 3-4 hours walking around enjoying the area. Definitely worth the visit.

For a Californian visiting twice a year is standard. The tram makes the 8,400 ft climb a joy, a thrill, and for some a white knuckle experience. My idea for the best times of year are the middle of winter, between storms or in early spring when the snow is almost gone. That when we went last time. It was gorgeous and easy to get alone in the wilderness. Hiking trails are awesome and it is only 10 miles to the very top at 10,800ft. We recorded it and featured it on our Youtube travel video 9nSY-VfiyyI

This is a fun experience; it's similar to other gondolas, etc. that are on other mountainsides elsewhere, but it is unique in that it rotates. It's a little scary when it rocks/sways when it passes a tower, but not terrifying, just a little moment of "ooh". It's quite a bit cooler at the top (which was wonderful for us in the June heat), and there are plenty of photo opps. The rest of my party when on the walk, but it was too hot for me (and I am too out of shape), so I enjoyed a comfortable seat in the shade, people-and-nature-and-view-watching, while waiting for them. There is a gift shop, a restaurant, and restrooms at top if you don't care to wait outside.
