Premier Juneau Whale Watching Expedition

Overview
Your 3 hour whale watching adventure begins when you board a coach bus that departs downtown Juneau from the Mt. Roberts Tram parking lot. A 25 minute journey through the picturesque landscape of Southeast Alaska will take you to Auke Bay Harbor. “All aboard!” and you’re off for Alaska waters and the ultimate whale watching experience. The star of the tour is the humpback whale, but we are always looking out for sea lions, bald eagles, or the playful orca. The whales are here to feed in our abundant Alaskan waters.  Our naturalist guides you on a 2 hour whale watching tour. With our experienced captains and Juneau being one of the best ports for whale watching in Alaska, this tour will be an unforgettable experience. A light snack and refreshments will be provided.

We booked this tour through Juneau Tours & Whale watching which included whale watching and a visit to Mendenall glacier. Overall I’d say it was an average experience. You meet at the main dock area in Juneau which was easy to find. They bus you about 20 minutes away to a marina where you get on your boat. Captain wasn’t the friendliest but really liked the deck hand who did most of the interacting. We left the marina for about a 30 minute boat ride out. They guarantee you will see whales which we did. We found a couple different pods of humpbacks. Probably about 8 or 9 in total. Law states you have to stay 100 yards away from them. Not sure if our captain was new or just scared but he was staying more like 400 yards away which made it difficult to see. You look for whales for about 45 minutes then back to the marina which was another 30 minutes. Disappointed we didn’t see any Orcas but we did see some sea lions on a bouy. Overall they did guarantee to see whales which we did but I left expecting more. From the marina you get on another bus which drives you to Mendenall glacier which took about 20 minutes. There they drop you off and leave. The driver said he’d be back in 90 minutes. If you walk the trail it takes about an hour (3 miles I think). We chose not to but then quickly realized there isn’t much else to do. After looking at the glacier which only took a few minutes we then had a lot of time to kill. There was 2 different bus drivers from Juneau Tours show up before our 90 minutes were done but both declined to drive us back to town which left us feeling stuck. Overall the glacier was cool but I definitely do not think it was worth the extra cost. Plus if your not hiking, this is about an hour longer than it needs to be. Just FYI… you do see Mendenall and 2 other glaciers on the whale watching tour. My biggest complaint about this tour company is every worker on this tour told us how much they appreciated tipping and this is how the service industry makes their living. I’m the type of person that is instantly turned off if your asking for a tip. Everyone knows you want tips. You don’t need to constantly say it. By booking this through Juneau Tours we did save about $500 versus the cruise line excursions. This place has great reviews so I’m guessing we just had a crappy captain and bus drivers. Would I recommend this tour? If you’ve never seen a humpback whale then yes. If your on an Alaskan cruise chances are you’ve already seen many like we had. If then, maybe I wouldn’t.

Fabulous trip with capt Dustin, Nate and Zoey. Really informative and we saw so many whales, porpoises, sea otters plus jumping salmon. Plus the added bonus of glorious weather.
