Whitney Museum of American Art
As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collectionā€”the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the worldā€”is itā€™s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museumā€™s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museumā€™s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

I had an opportunity to visit NYC a few weeks ago and swung by The Whitney. WOW! Some really unconventional yet beautiful pieces of art. A very thought provoking tour. The place is really designed and decorated with an artistic eye- which isn't always the case with art museums! Staff seemed kind and helpful. It inspired me to go home and make some of my own art. You won't regret this. Worth all the money (and bring money with you, don't be cheap!)

The museum is more that a repository for wonderful art. The layout and location of the Whitney is terrific. The views of the Hudson from the patios are great. The Archibald Motley collection is inspiring - especially the portraits of his grandmother and his interpretation of the jazz age. You can almost hear the music in some of his spectacularly colorful scenes of jazz halls of the era.

Arrived unplanned at the Whitney about 2 hours before closing one night this summer an really enjoyed this museum. The layout and great openness of this venue are incredible with views of the city and Hudson River something to see. I am not sure if always true, but arriving so late, we encountered very few people with no crowds at any exhibit and the night views of the city are outstanding. We started on the top floor and worked our way down and the variety and power of many of the art pieces made the 2 hours go by very quickly. One of my favorites is a room showing several pieces of art done by a variety of artist who all passed because of HIV. For those who don't care for Modern Art this place may not be not a good choice, but if it is something that captivates you, I would highly recommend this museum,
