Whitney Museum of American Art
As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collectionā€”the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the worldā€”is itā€™s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museumā€™s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museumā€™s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

My second visit to the new Whitney was as good as my first. The building design is part of the experience and the terraces off of the three top floors offer stunning views of most of Manhattan, from the Freedom Tower to the Empire State Building and beyond. The way to approach the museum is to take the elevator to the 8th floor and work your way down via the main stairwell. One this visit, the 8th floor was a temporary exhibit of Archibald Motely's Jazz Age paintings. Great use of the space and curation. Working your way down, you move forward chronologically. My favorite floors are the 5th and 6th, with art from the 70s and 80s. They have one of my favorite large-formal Rothko's, also Lichtenstein, Warhol, Pollack, Reinhardt, all the usual suspects. I think I like the Whitney more than than MOMA at this point, and that's saying something. Any fan of modern American art must visit the Whitney.

The new Whitney seemed to me a much better museum than it was in its former location. More art seemed to be on display, but the building itself was stunning. You can move from the inside art installations to outside terraces with places to sit and watch the nyc skyline. I went to the top floor first and worked down each floor. The floor with art themed around 9/11 was thought-provoking. On a nice day walk down the Hi Line to the museum.

A pilgrimage to the new Renzo Piano designed Whitney cannot disappoint. Explore the collections in this exquisite space that allows the art to resonate. Highlights for me include Eva Hesse, Louise Bourgeois, Chuck Close, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Robert Mapplethorpe and Alexander Calder. Seeing some of the greatest modern art, housed in an inspired building by one of our times' greatest architects is such a wonderful privilege. Just get over here!
