Whitney Museum of American Art
As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collectionā€”the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the worldā€”is itā€™s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museumā€™s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museumā€™s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

The new Museum is uniquely bold on the outside, has great and flowing galleries over many floors, and shows the museum's great collection well. The new location seemed courageous 10 years ago, but was clearly a great siting. The Whitney is joined to the High Line at the High Line's 14th street beginning, as a perfect cultural "full stop" after a serene stroll on the High Line. And it's clear, NY developers realize the incredible new resource of the walk and the museum. The neighborhood seems to be getting huge retail spruce ups, and building renovations abound.

Beautiful museum with openness and good space in a fun area of the city. We spent a couple hours there walking each floor and enjoyed not only the art and space but the outdoor areas and views provided

At it's fun new location next to high line walking trail and Chelsea Market, the Whitney is what you would hope an art museum would be. It's light airy feel adds to the cool vibe on the art on display. Don't miss the exhibit room on the main floor to the right where you'll see a decadent Painting of Gertrude Vanderbilt the founder of the museum lounging in her pantsuit which her husband wouldn't allow her to wear in public. I suppose quite scandalous for 1914. While the staff tells you to start at the top on 7th floor, it's not required. Don't think because there are 7 floors it's all full of art it's not, only the top 3 or 4 half floors, so not that much really is on display so it can be seen in a couple of hours. The few Georgia O'Keefe paintings were stunning, also really enjoyed Mr. Obata's landscapes in California. Some pieces were a little too out there for me, but still good to see and think about. As everywhere in NYC it's always crowded. Bathrooms and coat check is downstairs.
