Whitney Museum of American Art
As the preeminent institution devoted to the art of the United States, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents the full range of 20th century and contemporary American art, with a special focus on works by living artists. The Whitney is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting American art, and its collectionā€”the finest holding of twentieth-century American art in the worldā€”is itā€™s key resource. The Museum's signature exhibition, the Biennial, is the country's leading survey of the most recent developments in American art. Designed by architect Renzo Piano and situated between the High Line and the Hudson River, the Whitney's new building vastly increases the Museumā€™s exhibition and programming space, providing the most expansive view ever of its unsurpassed collection of modern and contemporary American art. Enjoy iconic works by Edward Hopper, Jackson Pollack, and Georgia O'Keeffe in natural light filled galleries and sweeping views of Manhattan on the Museumā€™s outdoor observation decks. The Whitney welcomes you to the Meatpacking District, a 20 square-block neighborhood with a bustling community of artists, galleries, restaurants, and nightlife. The Museum is steps from the High Line, Chelsea Market, and a short walk from Greenwich Village, where the Museum was founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930.

On my first visit I bought a membership. My daughter and I enjoyed the exhibits. It occurred to me that the true art here is the placement of this building. The views are priceless from the outdoor spaces on each floor, and also from the indoor seating where you can rest and enjoy the view of the Hudson River. The restaurants have excellent choices and courteous waitstaff. I have returned several times to enjoy the many facets of The Whitney.

Visied here on a mid-day Friday back on August 14. Was so surprised to find it very well attended - that is always nice to see and people of all ages were here as well. The museum is beautiful in its new reincarnation and is very easy to navigate. Beautiful patios on a number of floors, the art is very accessible and you can see the entire museum in less than 3 hours and you never feel rushed at all. Picture opportunities abound and as an added bonus you can hop on the High Line right out the front door. This is a must for anyone who loves art and especially when it is presented in such a great manner.

The building itself was very impressive. But, given its size, there wasn't a lot of art in there. We were interested in seeing the works of Edward Hopper, but there weren't as many as expected and they weren't all in one place. As with most museums that tend to push contemporary art, there were pieces there that looked as though the artists had been selected for being best in class - 3rd grade, that is. Weather permitting, sit outside on the decks (you may have to hunt for the doors) and enjoy lovely views of the city and (I think) parts of New Jersey. Then head for High Line and a pleasant, crowded, walk.
