Asia in Queens: Exploring NYC’s Largest Chinatown

Overview
This diversity is perhaps best represented through Flushing’s stellar food scene. On this walk through the neighborhood, we’ll explore the area’s almost mind-blowing culinary diversity while also learning about Flushing’s fascinating history. We’ll visit vendors, the outdoor stands of local restaurants and some of Flushing’s mall-based food courts – considered by locals to have some of the area’s best eats – tasting delicacies from China, Korea, Vietnam and other countries. From stalls selling Hong Kong-style dim sum and snacks to bakeries turning out the Korean take on French pastries and a visit to a local kimchi maker, we’ll dive deep into the best that the neighborhood has to offer. On our Flushing food tour, we’ll take a look at some of area’s unique cultural markers, from a storefront Daoist temple to the Flushing Quaker Meeting House, built in 1694 – a testament to the important role the area, originally a Dutch settlement, has played in the history of New York.

Our group of 5 took the Asia Queens tour over the weekend. I considered myself a knowledgeable Asian food eater until I took this tour. I thought it might be Asian Food 101 but it was an advanced course and a fantastic experience. They will, however, customize for you to your level of comfort. Most of our group was comfortable eating strange foods but I know everyone isn’t. I was blown away by the extent and variety of Asian food in Flushing. Just going there alone is a great experience. However, I highly recommend going with a “Sherpa”. Our Sherpa, Sierra came with an extraordinary wealth of knowledge that greatly enhanced the experience. She effortlessly guided us through several varieties of Chinese and Korean foods and introduced our group to new varieties that I can’t wait to try again.. She also had everything we could want in her backpack and fanny pack-extra forks, check, extra cups, check, scissors to cut up things, check and even need your phone charged, check. I can’t wait to go back to NYC and try another CB tour. I know this sounds like an ad but it isn’t.

We had a family group of 5 all visiting a (new) local resident, and we were excited to take this Culinary Backstreets food tour of Asia in Queens. Our tour guide was Esneider, and he brought a wealth of experience as a Jackson Heights resident, chef and international foodie into the mix. The tour covered so much ground, both geographically and culinarily - it was fantastic. We had dumplings and noodles and bao and ... we also saw culturally significant sights and buildings as we walked. The pace was perfect for a group of both young and older adults, and we ate like kings. Strongly recommend.

Sierra’s enthusiasm and in depth breath of knowledge of the food and history of the area was exceptional. We had an idea of some places and food stops we had researched and had wanted to see and those experiences were made much more enjoyable and meaningful with Sierra’s insights. Sierra’s love of the neighborhood was infectious and made the experience that much more enjoyable.
