Manta Magic - Night Manta Ray Snorkel At Manta Village, Kona, Hawaii

Overview
Avoid the crowds of the other "cattle boats" in Kona, and enjoy a small-group manta ray snorkeling experience with a maximum of 12 passengers.

This tour departs from Keahou Harbor in South Kona and enjoys a short 5-minute boat ride to our snorkeling site, Manta Village.

Your Captain and snorkel guide will educate you on Kona's famous manta rays and will discuss our safe and humane approach to engaging with the gentle giants.

After entering the water, you'll hold onto our lightboard, with your feet propped up by floatation devices, as the manta rays perform a graceful ballet beneath you. The manta rays filter feed on plankton that naturally gathers at the surface just before sunset, then accumulates underneath our lights. This is an opportunity to enjoy an evening on the water and watch in amazement as the manta rays glide around and dance for you.

We are proud to be a Green Listed company, and we take an environmentally cautious approach to our interactions with the manta rays.

The 2-man crew (Chad and Dylan) were great, knowledgeable and safe in what can be an intimidating setting. These manta rays seem truly alien and creepy, especially approaching you from the depths, but they’re so graceful and peaceful ... I even got a fin rub from one! It’s impossible to describe you have to actually see it for yourself. Our tour had a number of nervous folks and novice swimmers and the crew made everyone as comfortable as they could and were incredibly patient with everyone. The trip back included some amazing stars, bioluminescent plankton in our wake and fun conversations with our crew. All in all one of the best two hours I’ve experienced on a vacation. Do not miss this one. ... but if you are on the late tour, you likely don’t need to get there early :)

We had a great captain (Chad) and deckhand (Dylan). They were friendly and helpful when we arrived and helped my mother and my teenagers get ready for the fun adventure. They are located on the top floor of their building which was originally hard to find. Once we got our 3/4 wetsuits and masks, we were ready to go. The boat is a 27’ one so it was just the right size to hold 11 people that were on the boat. On the ride out, it was nice and warm. The breeze felt great. We were able to see a few humpback whales swimming and a nice tail in the air as the whale submerged. We were lucky enough to see a school of hammerhead sharks swimming together where the captain got us next to them allowing me to put my go pro in the water to capture them in their natural habitat. We finally reached the location which was next to the Sheraton. We did a little snorkeling until the sunset. Then the board with lights was put in the water. It was fun seeing all the small plankton in the water next to us that you never really think about when swimming in the daytime. As soon as we got in the water we were given a nice acrobatic swirl from a manta. It was a great experience seeing this creature right next to our faces... unfortunately, that was the only one that I saw on the trip. When we got out of the water when the time was up another manta came and rolled right under the board. I missed seeing that one. As this is nature, I understand we’re at the whim of when these creatures come by.. Glad I was able to see one up close and hope to see more the next time I come to the big island. Overall a great experience.

We were so glad we picked Hawaii Oceanic for our Manta Magic experience. Chad and Dillon were professional and safety conscious but kept it light and entertaining. There's something pretty amazing about jumping into the ocean at night to watch huge rays circle below you, feeding on plankton. They really are awesome. Can't wait to see the free photos that will pop up on Facebook very soon for us to download. Thanks guys!
