Mendenhall Lake Canoe Adventure

Overview
Paddle across Mendenhall Lake, navigating past icebergs, surrounded by Alaskan wildlife on an exceptionally stable, 28-foot, traditional Tlingit-style canoe, with all modern safety gear supplied. Venture within a safe distance of the awe-inspiring face of the Mendenhall Glacier and the beautiful Nugget Falls where you will hit the beach and refuel for the return paddle with an Alaskan-style snack. Due to the close approach to the glacier face, the Forest Service tightly controls the number of participants. Be one of the lucky few to experience this one-of-a-kind adventure!

Time to Stop Using Outdated Pictures, to Alaska Travel Adventure. This picture does sell, it prompted me to buy this canoe trip. However, everyone in my group felt somewhat gaslighted by the company when arriving at the Mendenhall Glacier seeing that the ice has receded so much since that picture was taken. We would've still gone on this trip, accepted the fact that due to climate change the glacier has receded, and left without feeling cheated by the company.

We enjoyed our canoe trip to Mendenhall Glacier and the stop at Nugget Falls. The reviews are correct that the 2 miles of canoeing take some work, but the guide does a good job taking breaks, and helping the team set a consistent rhythm and pace. The view of the glacier is much better than you can get from the visitor center or the falls. It is also eye-opening to see how far the glacier has receded in only a few years, and that soon you may not be able to see the glacier from the visitor center at all. Nugget Falls was a nice stop, and the guide produced a nice snack of salmon dip which was tasty, and gave us some energy for the paddle back. You have to get to the falls, either from the visitor center or via a canoe trip to understand the scale. The only comment I would make is that the pictures do indicate you get much closer to the glacier than you actually do. Not saying you are not closer than other access point, but you are not reaching out and touching it! This is likely both a permitting and safety issue, so fully understand the limits - just a caution on impressions.

This is a great excursion!!!. ItĀØis an exiting experience , but going to the lake by canoe is kind of exhausting if you are not used to canoeing. Our tour guide, John, was exellent , very knowledgeable of the glacier, Nugget Falls, wildlife etc... Even when it was cloudly on August 3, the water that fell from the falls was a beautiful emerald green!!!. I had never done this before, but surley, i would do it again!!!
