The high point (‘cuse the pun) of our five day trip to NY from the UK. Booked in advance via the New York Pass website where you pay per person then contact Liberty helicopters to agree on a day / time for the actual flight. Sounds complicated but it was very easy. I would advise booking several weeks in advance to get the dates you want if time is critical. Weather smiled on us and we had perfect conditions for the flight clear blue sky which meant we had panoramic view of all of Manhattan. Check in twenty mins to clear registration (separate to the cost of the flight is a local tax $20 ? each I seem to remember). Must take your passport for ID. You have to watch a safety video which was unintentionally humorous e.g. “don’t walk towards the rear rotor blades” and my favourite “please don’t carry children on your shoulders towards the ‘copter” They also ask your weight in order to balance out the total laden weight. Waiting for your flight was a little tedious but once on the flight deck it went very smooth. You have to wear headphones to hear the pilots commentary which was very informative, but can’t talk to each other. You can use camera / video / smart phone but don’t forget you are shooting through a vibrating, scratched Perspex shell so don’t expect high quality results. Our pilot was very professional and the flight went very smooth. The views are spectacular and it really puts NY into perspective. Not cheap but well worth the money. Glad to recommebd

This is not a cheap activity but it is worth the money. I chose the less expensive option, thinking that the tour would be very limited in time and scope. I was very surprised to see how much is covered is 15 minutes. What makes this particular tour a bit cheaper is that we had to wait longer in a less comfortable area. But service was very friendly and the experience was definitely worth the wait.

We did this tour back in 2004 before having kids and there was no way we were going to miss out on the opportunity to do it again. We actually arrived about an hour early but once through security they allocated us on the next but one helicopter so there was not waiting around. The trip isn’t cheap but it clearly gives you a view of the city that you can’t get anywhere else. Do also bear in mind the heliport taxes and an additional cost if you want to buy a photo. It soon adds up for a family of four! Disappointingly they did sit our youngest / smallest in the centre seat on the back row so he wasn’t afforded the best view but he seemed happy enough. The only real complaint we had throughout was that one of the headphones for my children didn’t work so she actually heard none of the tour, which was a shame but with so much to look at it didn’t really impact it the memory of it all. Leaving the heliport you get excellent views of Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan as you approach and round the Statue of Liberty, from there you travel up the Hudson with Union City to the West and views past the Empire State, past Central Park and all the way up to the Yankees Stadium and George Washington Bridge. My photos didn’t really do the trip justice but in my opinion you really are missing out if you do not experience this whilst in NYC.
